HUNTING EQUIPMENT
Gear Up for the Ultimate Pursuit
At Nahla Safaris, we want every guest to be fully prepared for their African hunting adventure. Whether you bring your own firearm or prefer the convenience of using one of ours, we provide guidance and support to make your safari smooth, safe, and enjoyable.
Firearms and Ammunition
Hunting in South Africa includes a wide variety of plains game and dangerous game species, and selecting the right firearm and ammunition is key to an ethical and successful hunt.
Recommended Caliber’s
- Plains Game (Small to Medium): .243, 6.5 Creedmoor
- Plains Game (Medium to Large): .30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag
- Dangerous Game: By law, a minimum of .375 H&H is required across Southern
Africa. We recommend a .375 H&H or larger.
Ammunition and Bullets
Use high-quality, controlled-expansion bullets for reliability and performance. Premium options such as Barnes TSX and Swift A-Frame have proven effective. For dangerous game, we recommend a combination of soft and solid rounds.
Rifle Hire
At Nahla Safaris, we offer convenient rifle hire options for guests who prefer not to bring their own firearms. Rifles are available for hire at $75 per day, per calibre, with ammunition provided at cost price. Our selection of calibres includes .243 Win, .300 Win Mag, .300 WSM, and .375 H&H, ensuring you have the right firearm for a safe and ethical hunt. All rifles are carefully maintained and ready for use under the guidance of our experienced professional hunters.
Traveling with Firearms
If bringing personal rifle(s), ensure they are transported in durable, lockable hard cases, with ammunition stored separately. A soft case per rifle is recommended for daily field use to protect against dust and provide secure storage in vehicles. Before travel, zero your rifles, as scopes may shift in transit. Your Professional Hunter (PH) will verify accuracy upon arrival. A variable power scope is ideal for South Africa’s diverse hunting conditions.
Important: A temporary import/export permit is required for all firearms entering South Africa. We strongly recommend using a clearing agent to simplify the process.
- Ammunition may not be packed inside checked luggage.
- Maximum 200 rounds per firearm per caliber are permitted.
- Maximum of four firearms per hunter, no more than one of the same caliber.
- Firearms are permitted on domestic SA Airlink flights (additional baggage fees
apply). - Ammunition cases must not exceed 5 kg (11 lbs).
- Importation of firearms is restricted to individuals 21 years and older.
Firearm Import Permits
All firearms must be declared with U.S. Customs (Form 4457) before departure. A temporary import/export permit is required and may be obtained on arrival at Johannesburg International Airport, or arranged in advance.
We recommend using RiflePermits.com, a trusted service working with the South African Police Service to facilitate firearm importation.
Documents Required
- U.S. Customs Declaration (Form 4457)
- SAPS 520 Import Application
- Letter of Invitation from Nahla Safaris
- Copies of passport, flight itinerary, and completed forms

Bow Hunting Equipment
Nahla Safaris accommodates compound bows for certain plains game species. Use a bow with a draw weight suitable for your target species and high-quality broadheads for ethical and effective harvesting. Your PH will provide guidance on safe hunting practices and optimal shooting distances.
Please Note: Nahla Safaris does not provide bow rental.
Bow hunters do not require an import permit but must complete the U.S. Customs 4457 Declaration.
Optics & Photography
A good pair of binoculars enhances your hunting experience, allowing you to share in your PH’s spotting and fully enjoy the African wildlife and scenery.
Bring a camera or smartphone set to high resolution, with charging cables on hand, to capture your safari memories. Your PH will also take high-quality photos of all animals harvested, which will be transferred to you before departure, ensuring you leave with lasting memories.
For a premium experience, Nahla Safaris offers professional photography and videography services at an additional cost. Our media team can document your entire safari, from the thrill of the hunt to the beauty of the African landscape, providing expertly edited photos and videos to treasure and share.
